History

In 1839, a School of Technical Operations was founded which in due course developed and became School of Arts and Industries in 1932, then later School of Applied Engineering. It continued to exercise its task until 1946 when a ministerial decree was issued giving the school the name of the Higher Institute of Engineering. When law No. 93 in 1950 was passed to establish Ibrahim Pasha University, the High Institute of Engineering became the nucleus of the Faculty of Engineering. The Faculty of Engineering, having completed its infrastructure and facilities, became one of the incorporated faculties of the University.

after the 1952 Revolution, it was suggested that Egyptian universities be given names that were strongly linked with the roots and historical landmarks of the country. Thus on February 21, 1954 the name of the university was changed to "Heliopolis", and then changed in the same year to its present name "Ain Shams", the Arabic name for "Heliopolis", or "O'n", which was the oldest university in history. "O'n" University was established about 5000 years ago, and it had a wide fame as a center of knowledge and learning, especially in astronomy, engineering and medicine. and so the faculty is known as Faculty of Engineering, ain shams university.

Current departments at the faculty

Like all engineering schools in Egypt, the study is five years, beginning with the preparatory year (where the student is prepared for the engineering studies after high school). then the student enters one of four main departments according to their score in the preparatory year. each of these departments is further subdivided. at the end of five years of study, the student specializes in one of total twelve departments.

the Twelve academic departments are now well established in the faculty with more than 780 staff members and their assistants. The academic departments offer courses to undergraduate students to cater for their aptitudes and specializations. Also, they offer courses to graduate students according to the research plan declared by the departments and approved by the faculty council. The basic science courses are taught through the department of physics and engineering mathematics. All other departments lie within four groups:

The Civil Engineering Departments Group

The Architectural Engineering Departments Group

The Electrical Engineering Departments Group

The Mechanical Engineering Departments Group

The academic departments comprise a large number of laboratories furnished with most recent equipment and scientific instruments. They are always expanded and updated to go in parallel with the curriculum and research plan of the faculty.

General Rules and Regulations

Period of Study

The required period of study in the faculty to obtain a B.Sc. degree is five academic years. It starts with a preparatory year, which is general and common for all students. Specialization follows from first year according to the tables of the curricula.

Academic Standings

The grades of the successful student in a course and in the general grade are evaluated as follows.

The grades of a failing student in a course is estimated in one of the following grades:

The B.Sc. general grade for students is based on the cumulative marks obtained during all the years of study. The students are then arranged serially according to their cumulative sum. The student is awarded an honor degree if his cumulative sum is distinction or very good provided that he gets a grade not less than very good in any class of study other than the preparatory year. Moreover, he should have not failed in any examination he has sat in any class other than the preparatory year.
